Luburic and Petric lead Serbia to the first win, Cameroon beaten 3-0

Bari, Italy, September 13, 2018 – Drazen Luburic stood in for Atanasijevic and scored 19 points, leading Serbia to the first triumph. Along with the top scorer Luburic, captain Nemanja Petric stood out in this great Balcan team play, scoring 12 points and performing his debut in the World Championship as a leader. On the other side of the net, captain Nathan Wounenbaina didn’t manage to avoid the Serbian overtaking in the ranking, despite 14 points he scored in the match.

In the second match of the second day of the tournament, Cameroon took on Serbia. At one hand, the Lions were thirsting for a second victory after the victory against Tunisia. On the other hand, there was the Serbian team aiming at payback after the defeat at the tie-break against USA. The Champions of Italy Atanasijevic and Podrascanin along with Kovacevic sudden remained on the bleachers, while captain Petric guided the team on the court. The venue was crowded with cheering supporters, who could enjoy an engaging first set from the very beginning. The African race was stopped at 28-30 by a quick spike of Lisinac. Serbia kept focussed and determined to prevent from repeating errors and making their opponents shorten their margin. In the second set the Balkan side ensuited a tougher withstand to lead 25-16 and seal a 2-0 lead in the match. Both coach Mayam Re Niof and coach Grbic kept on turning to players from the bleachers, but they did it for different reasons. Serbia paced the game and let the players, who had not played yet, to take on court. Cameroon tried to avoid a dangerous turn of events, but Kody, Enghole and Mayam didn’t manage to put pressure on Serbia, which ended the match off 17-25 and claim a 3-0 win.
